Northamptonshire police help address parking problems at schools

26/11/2015
Police have visited schools in Northamptonshire to help tackle parking problems as part of Road Safety Week.

Officers from Northamptonshire Police and Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service have been giving talks to children about how to stay safe when on the roads. However, the police forces also took the opportunity to speak to parents and carers, giving them guidance to avoid any parking problems during drop-off and pick-up times.

All Saints Primary School in Castle Street is one such school in the area that has experienced parking issues. Police went to this school on Wednesday (25 November) and offered some parking enforcement advice, as well as tips on how to park in a safer, less obtrusive manner.

Among the things covered by the police during Road Safety Week has been guidance on avoiding parking on zig-zag markings, choosing the safest places when crossing the road and always allowing for emergency vehicle access, the Northamptonshire Telegraph reported.

Police officers have also speed camera awareness sessions with children, in which pupils are taught how to assess the speed at which a car is travelling so they can better judge when to cross the road.

Sara Postlethwaite, an engagement team leader from the Safer Roads Team, a collaboration between the Northamptonshire Police and Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service and Northamptonshire Highways, said it is vital that children are made aware of road risks and how to overcome them.

She added: "Parking problems are such an issue for many schools in the county, so we are using Road Safety Week as a good opportunity to engage with parents and raise awareness of some of the hazards for children and other pedestrians and drivers if unsafe parking is practised in close proximity to schools."
