Wiltshire authorities crack down on illegal parking

10/04/2014
Drivers in Broadgreen, Wiltshire, are being warned that police and civil enforcement officers have launched a new clamp down on illegal parking in the area.

The joint operation has come about after police reported seeing a sharp rise in illegal parking and anti-social parking over the last few weeks.

Broadgreen community beat manager, PC Luke Atkinson, told This Is Wiltshire: “We conducted similar operations in 2013 which led to a drastic reduction in the number of vehicles parking unlawfully and had a hugely positive feedback from the community.

“Unfortunately this problem has arisen again in recent weeks and is very frustrating for local residents who buy annual parking permits. Along with our colleagues in Swindon Council we have been out in the area identifying vehicles parked unlawfully and a number of tickets have been issued.

“These operations will continue and any identified offences will be dealt with robustly."

Swindon Council is working on the installation of new signage around the area in order to make motorists aware of resident parking restrictions along with no-waiting zones around the area.

Businesses on Manchester Road in the town have voiced their concerns regarding the civil enforcement, however, saying that customers are being prevented from shopping on the road.

Dan Bateman, owner of Dan’s Cycles on Manchester Road, told the publication: “They are really clamping down on it now, and our customers can’t even pull up for five minutes before a warden pulls up on them. I can’t see why they can’t make residents’ parking more flexible during working hours to give us a bit of relief”.
