Wakefield police crack down on illegal parking outside schools

Police officers were forced to give out at least 20 parking tickets outside 12 schools over the course of just two weeks in July.

The penalty notices were issued in a bid to highlight just how lethal parking incorrectly outside schools can be. Officers have been focusing particularly on schools in areas including Crofton, Eastmoor, Flanshaw, Ossett and Outwood and have been patrolling the areas at school pick-up and drop-off time.

Inspector Ian Williams told the Yorkshire Post that the parking problem would not go away, which was why the operation had become a part of daily police work for the Neighbourhood Policing Teams.

He said: “The operation is fluid and dynamic. It is designed to target offenders not prevent offences on the day. This is why we will be arriving unannounced shortly before the start and finish of the school day.

“We are still working with the council road safety team and the schools to educate parents and promote alternative means of transport such as walking busses. The combined impact of what we are doing will prevent and reduce this problem, which is not only a danger to children but inconveniences residents.”
