Opposition mounts against Barry town centre parking charges

A campaign to stop residents in Barry having to pay for parking in the town centre has gained momentum following further protests on Saturday (8 August).

Vale MP Alun Cairns has led the opposition to Vale Council's parking enforcement plans that will see charges brought into town centre parking. The council wants to begin charging motorists £5 should they wish to park in the Wyndham and Thompson Street car parks.

Mr Cairns and residents have started a petition about the proposed car park solution, with signatures being added thick and fast, Barry and District News reported. On Saturday 15 people gathered at the Wyndham Street car park to voice their displeasure about the plans.

Mr Cairns commented: “The community came out in large numbers to express concern about proposals in both Barry and Cowbridge to introduce significant car parking charges.

"Having spoken to many, many people about these plans – there is anger about the potential impact on our communities. I have also received many messages of support from many residents in other towns like Llantwit Major who are concerned about future plans."

Campaigner and Pride in Barry chairman Paul Haley added his thanks to those who showed their support during the protests over the parking charges, which he thinks would hurt local shoppers and traders.
