Great Dawley Town Council pledges funds to tackle illegal parking

Following a high volume of complaints from residents in Telford, Great Dawley Town Council has pledged to ensure the problem of illegal parking is focused on.

Locals living in the town, as well as businesses, have been complaining about the lack of police presence following cutbacks made by West Mercia Police. They feel this has led to a rise in the number of vehicles parking illegally.

Town council chairman Shaun Davies confirmed that, while local policing teams were still operating in Telford, they were now forced to operate over far larger areas including the town centre and Southwater, meaning that they were thinner on the ground.

Councillor Davies told the Shropshire Star: "We have listened to concerned residents and businesses about the lack of local policing. Councillors have demanded a dedicated community support officer (CSO) to cover Dawley, Malinslee and Dawley Bank, which makes up Great Dawley Town Council. They have put £20,000 into their draft budget to contribute toward the post.

"It is hoped that the CSO will have powers to issue parking tickets but also deal with residents and business concerns."

Councillor Davies added that he was hopeful the extra funding would benefit residents and businesses in the area. He stated that the scheme to address parking issues was going to add to the ones already in operation in Wellington and Newport.
