Edinburgh airport parking jumps to £1 for five minutes

14/11/2013
A car park near Edinburgh airport has become one of the most expensive in Britain since the charges increased to £1 for a five minute stay.

The price jump to £2.90 for 15 minutes makes the car park the most expensive in Scotland and comparable with both London City and Luton airports.

The new fees have triggered outrage amongst the city's tax operators, who are likely to be the hardest hit and have labelled the charges a rip-off.

Tony Kenmuir, director of Central Taxis, told the Edinburgh Evening News: “They told us they thought that was a fair market rate compared to other car parks, but they are the most expensive by miles outside of London.”

The price rise, which came into effect on 1 November, has also angered local drivers who regularly drop off or pick up loved ones from the airport.

Edinburgh Western MSP Colin Keir agrees, suggesting that airports should have a "degree of sympathy" for those who need to use the parking facilities for only a short period of time.

However, airport owners Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) have defended the charge, suggesting that those who are unhappy with the prices can use public transport as an alternative.

GIP have also confirmed that the fees will aid the £25 million airport expansion that began in October.
