Cheshire towns to benefit from free afternoon parking

08/08/2013
Seven towns across Cheshire are to benefit from a free parking scheme that has been introduced in a bid to help local businesses deal with tough trading conditions.

The ‘Free After Three’ initiative allows motorists to park their vehicles without paying parking charges after 3pm in Wilmslow, Crewe, Nantwich, Knutsford, Congleton, Macclesfield and Alderley Edge. One car park in each of these towns will offer the free parking, meaning that there could well be queues of motorists attempting to use the car parking spaces.

David Topping from Cheshire East Council told the BBC that the scheme would enable people to “spend more time in their local town centres”.

The free parking scheme was trialled initially in Macclesfield, and comes about as a result of calls from Local Government Secretary Eric Pickles for local councils to "rein in" car parking charges levied upon motorists.

A spokesman for Cheshire East Council told the news source that the revised charges would apply to all motorists making use of the free car park in each town, including "all-day parkers, [who] will see their usual costs reduced”.

Mr Topping went on to say that he hoped the scheme would work well and that local businesses in Cheshire would “gradually be able to notice a difference”.
