Carlisle business park suffering from illegal parking woes

A Carlisle business park has suffered from illegal parking woes for so long that action is now to be taken following increasing concerns raised by local firms.

Businesses in the area have said that they are being negatively affected by the issue of illegal parking at Fletcher Way, on the Kingstown Industrial Estate. A recent Cumbria County Council report found that there was a particular issue with “caravans belonging to the travelling community”. Now, plans are afoot to block the end of Fletcher Way in a bid to resolve the problem.

Pete Crouch, the managing director of Liquid Design, one of the firms which is based in Fletcher Way, said that many firms had problems with large lorries parking overnight opposite the entrance to their car park.

“It limits our visibility and it’s an inconvenience. It’s mainly lorries – I don’t think we’ve had an issue [with caravans],” he told In Cumbria. He added that lorry drivers opted for the Fletcher Way area to park as there was no charge.

Furthermore, Mr Crouch claimed that the illegal parking caused problems with litter: “The drivers just tip them [pizza boxes] out and drive off,” he said.

Last month, members of the Carlisle Highways and Transport Working Group mulled two options to deter the illegal parking, one of which was to construct a curved kerb to guide vehicles into the car park, along with the roll out of no through road signs.

The other option was to install gates to block off the far end of the road, as well as adding no through road signs.

Members of Cumbria County Council’s Local Committee for Carlisle will meet this week to sign off on one of the plans.
