Brunel Road car park closure set to cause chaos

05/06/2014
Residents in the surrounding area of the Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council in Leicestershire may face substantial car parking problems following the announcement that the Brunel Road car park is to be closed.

The car park is set to be demolished in favour of a bus station development, which will cause an influx of parked cars in the already over-stretched area.

Currently, the car park can accommodate 272 cars which is almost a fifth of parking spaces offered in Hinckley. Of these, 123 were long stay but many employees of the Hinckley Hub prefer to park closer to the offices in surrounding streets rather than use this facility.

Councillor Stuart Bray, leader of the borough council, said: “I have been pressing very hard for additional parking in that area because of parking problems on nearby streets.

“A number of staff already have parking permits but still park on the streets for convenience. Until the county council come up with some sort of parking restrictions there is not an awful lot councillors can do.”

A proposal to transfer the currently vacant Rock Garage on Rugby Road into an additional car park for Hinckley Hub, staff will be formally submitted in hopes that the parking difficulties can be resolved.

If approved it will temporarily provide an extra 22 parking spaces until a long-term solution has been found.
