Bideford police crackdown on illegal parking

12/12/2013
Police in Bideford, North Devon, have announced a crackdown on illegal parking in the town centre, which will take place over the festive period.

The battle against the town's illegal parking will see police officers join forces with civil parking enforcement officers to patrol the town in an attempt to reduce the level of dangerous and illegal parking.

Police officers have announced that Bridgeland Street has been identified as one of the worst areas for illegal parking offences, and will therefore be targeted by the teams over the coming month.

Bideford Police Neighbourhood Team Leader Sergeant Paul McWhinnie said: "Parking in Bridgeland Street is a particular problem. We're concerned that with people parking down both sides of the street there's little room for drivers to take evasive action as unseen pedestrians have to cross the road from between parked cars."

Sergeant McWhinnie also highlighted the importance of the crackdown for the emergency services, who are often forced to park in the middle of the road due to the number of cars.

Local police officers have been delivering letters to properties along Bridgeland Street and the surrounding area informing them of the parking rules ahead of the police crackdown throughout December.
