Aberdeen to refund £10k worth of parking tickets

Thousands of pounds worth of parking tickets in Aberdeenshire are to be refunded after a private parking company incorrectly issued penalty notices.

Following an investigation by Aberdeenshire Council’s Trading Standards Service, drivers who were incorrectly fined for leaving their vehicles at a private car park in Westhill will get their money back.

Over 300 notices were given out to consumers who were said to have broken the car park's terms and conditions between September and December 2014.

However, one nearby business allowed its customers to use the car park for free.

As a result of the investigation, 136 paid parking charge notices worth around £5,500 have been refunded by the private parking firm and a further 150 outstanding notices worth £5,940 were cancelled.

South West Aberdeenshire Citizens Advice Bureau manager Eveline Crossan said: "The staff and volunteer advisers from the Citizens Advice Bureau in Westhill welcome this excellent outcome for our many clients who sought advice on how to challenge these charges.

"Trading Standards and our Bureau have worked collaboratively over a number of months to encourage resolution of the problem."

Aberdeenshire Council's Trading Standards manager Wilma Urquhart added that full details of parking rules and regulations are available for drivers to view on the council's website.
